Make Mechanical Warehousing and Logistics Soar

I. Mechanical | Mechanical | Industry Challenges

The mechanical manufacturing industry belongs to the industrial sector and sits in the midstream of the industrial chain, facing pressure from both upstream and downstream. Most small and medium-sized enterprises have long struggled with weak bargaining power and intense market competition. With rising costs and the broader trend of digital transformation in the industry, many mechanical manufacturers focus on process improvements while neglecting the automation upgrade of warehouses, which becomes a shortfall in digital transformation. Building intelligent warehouses to strengthen supply chain management is imperative.

III. Successful Case | Upgrading Automated Warehousing to Support Jinwang Smart Factory

1. Timeline

1) First inquiry: June 2023; 2) Contract signed: July 2023; 3) Delivery: October 2024

2. Project Background

Jiangsu Jinwang Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd. is a professional intelligent equipment manufacturing and service-oriented Internet platform company engaged in the R&D, manufacturing, sales, and service of agrochemical intelligent factories (intelligent processing, intelligent packaging, smart warehousing, digital platform).

In 2023, the company set an annual goal to build a smart factory. At the second factory, full-scale implementation has begun, with the automated warehouse serving as the first step in this transformation.

3. Planning and Design

EFX highly customized smart warehousing system solution

The existing warehouse storage racks and production buffer racks were integrated. The stacker crane storage serves both as a warehouse and as production buffer storage. Through material conveyor lines connected to the production line, materials from the production line can be directly stored in the warehouse. When materials are needed, the production line MES calls the warehouse, which then directly outputs the materials.

4. System Equipment

Tote warehouse: 3,986 storage locations; one 22-meter-high tote straight-track double-depth stacker crane; 24 tote conveyor lines

IV. Project Challenges Wheels Project

After fully understanding the client’s requirements, EFX noted that due to warehouse layout, horizontal space was limited. The client needed to fully utilize vertical space. With a building net height of 22.5 meters, the storage rack had to reach 22 meters to maximize storage locations.

Project Challenge 1: Break the conventional stacker crane picking method to maximize storage locations

Project Challenge 2: Integrate the 22-meter-high storage with the three production line levels

V. Solutions

  • Non-standard equipment, breaking conventional fork picking method, using clamp forks

The conventional stacker crane picks items from the bottom of pallets, which occupies vertical space. For this project, clamp-style forks were used, which do not occupy vertical space and allow for full planning of storage locations.

  • Direct integration with production line

Since the production line has material buffering, it can directly connect with the automated warehouse. Semi-finished products from production can be directly stored. When the production line needs materials, the MES calls the warehouse for direct output.

VI. Project Delivery

Successful pilot, setting a company precedent

After delivery, the project achieved outstanding results. The successful implementation of automated warehousing set a strong foundation for the overall construction of the smart factory, with far-reaching significance.

III. Successful Case | Automated Warehouse System Upgrade Supports Industry-Leading Smart Agricultural Machinery Factory

1. Timeline

1) First inquiry: October 2023; 2) Contract signed: April 2024; 3) Delivery: July 2024

2. Project Background

Jiangsu Aiwei Machinery Manufacturing Co., Ltd., founded in 2012 with foreign capital investment, specializes in the production of agricultural machinery and primarily focuses on export business. The company collaborates with top enterprises in the industry. Aiwei Machinery’s raw materials and finished products were previously stored flat on the warehouse floor, resulting in low space utilization. All materials required manual management, causing difficulties in locating items and slow outbound processes.

3. Planning and Design

In the project design, EFX upgraded the original flat material storage to a automated warehouse. Different rack sizes were designed according to the dimensions of the products, allowing the warehouse to make full use of vertical space and reduce floor-level storage. A WMS management system was integrated so that all materials can be queried in the system at any time, providing real-time information on quantities and storage locations. This simplified management and greatly improved inbound and outbound efficiency.

4. System Equipment

Pallet warehouse: 1,116 storage locations; one 9-meter-high tote straight-track single-depth stacker crane; ten pallet conveyor lines

IV. Project Challenges Wheels Project

After fully understanding the client’s requirements, EFX noted that due to the factory’s production processes, materials and finished products were stored flat on the floor, resulting in extremely low space utilization. Upgrading to a automated warehouse required making full use of vertical space. Project challenge: product dimensions vary, requiring different rack sizes and layouts.

V. Solution

  • Break conventional rack layouts, design different rack sizes

Different rack storage locations were designed according to product dimensions. Unique product codes were assigned, and materials are scanned upon entry using barcode scanners, which feed data into the WMS. The system automatically places items in the corresponding rack sizes based on the layout and recorded product information, greatly improving storage, retrieval, and overall warehouse efficiency.

VI. Project Delivery

Successful automation upgrade

Multiple benefits achieved in a single implementation.

After project delivery, the client provided highly positive feedback. EFX helped Aiwei Machinery improve productivity while minimizing the impact of personnel changes on production rhythm, ensuring the factory’s daily automated workflow. This upgrade further enhanced the client’s competitiveness within the industry.
